The rich just keep getting richer. Once again, the North Carolina A&T indoor track teams are champions of the Middle Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Aggies displayed the “Mamba Mentality after bringing home five titles from the MEAC indoor champions at Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland.
Despite entering Saturday’s contests trailing, the Aggies rallied to capture the title after barely edging out the 2nd place Hampton University Pirates. With 2x most outstanding coach of the year in the MEAC, Duane Ross, leading the way the NC A&T Men’s track team have been building a powerhouse program and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
By sweeping both the men’s and women’s indoor titles, North Carolina A&T becomes the first MEAC school to repeat in both the men’s and women’s championships since Delaware State in 1987.
Christopher Belcher is arguably one of the best athletes to ever come through NCAT and some would say he is an even better person. Belcher, a native of Sayville, New York, has competed in races across the globe from Monaco to London, and has even raced against track legends such as Usain Bolt.
This past summer Belcher signed a professional contract with Nike. Belcher is a leader, who has love for his team and the will to win and that is what’s most exciting about Belcher’s future. A few months ago True Bulll had the opportunity to sit down with the emerging track star to talk about his team and his journey.
Belcher recalled his initial meeting with Coach Ross and how he predicted the success of this team.
“We came out to the track where he showed me the team showed me the facilities and gave me A&T jacket to wear. And he basically sat me down and was just like “yo I promise you if you come here you’re gonna be the seed of me rebuilding this program,” said Belcher. “We’re going to win back to back titles indoors and outdoors, I’m going to make you a NCAA champion, and you’re gonna be a professional track athlete after this.”
“We have the athletes here to do it, we’re just not a big school like the ACC, and the SEC or Pac 12, so you’re just not gonna come down here and find out but if you really want to find some good raw talent come down here. Especially with the some good coaching that he we have here. It’s a match made in heaven.”
And it most definitely has been. After an impressive couple of seasons the NCAT track team will look to fulfill the prophecy of Coach Ross and Honor the legacy of Belcher as they try to capture another MEAC outdoor title this spring.
