The Oklahoma Sooners are 12-2 and third in the Big 12 Conference, thanks to their new superstar Trae Young. The freshman point guard is averaging a double-double with 29.4 points and 10.2 assists. In addition to averaging a double-double Young is responsible for 1.8 steals and 3.9 rebounds a game.
The Sooners were not even ranked in the top 25 of the preseason AP poll. Now they are the 7th ranked team in all of college basketball. The team recently went on a ten game winning streak before losing a hard fought game to a tough West Virginia team on the road. During that span the sooners beat teams such as Oregon, TCU, USC, and Wichita State.
Oklahoma is first in points per game averaging 94.4 points. The team is also 9th in assists with around 14 per game.
The 6’2, 180Ibs freshman is surprising the nation with his play. Young is shooting 46 percent from the field and 38 percent from the three-point line.
The freshman is being recognized by NBA stars like LeBron James and Stephen Curry. On December 24th, James posted pictures of him and Trae Young on his Instagram. He commented saying keep going young king, don’t stop fam. Steph Curry said, “He’s unbelievable. Just the confidence he plays with, I call it the flair.”
Trae Young is already making history 14 games into the season. He’s the first in two decades to score 20 points and dish 20 assist in a game and he tied the NCAA Division-1 record for assists in a game with 22 against Northwestern State. Young is also breaking Oklahoma program records. He passed Stacey King and Wayman Tisdale for longest 20-point streak. Young has scored 20 in thirteen straight games.
His performance has led many to compare his game to Curry’s.In 2008-2009 Curry shot 38.7% from three point range. Young is shooting 38 percent from the three point line as well. Also, Curry average 5.6 assists that season in Davidson while Young is averaging 10.2 assist so far this season.
As of right now, Trae Young is showing he is an NBA talent. He recorded 8 double-doubles; and have scored 30 points or more five times. He plays with so much confidences and shows substantial leadership skills.
There is no doubt that Trae Young is a great scorer and passer, but the questions about his game are still pressing. How long can he keep this up? How will his game translate to the NBA ranks? No matter the questions people have now, if Young continues to play on this level, he should definitely be ready for the next step of his basketball career.
